What is Trademark Registration? / Why and how to register a Trademark?
A trademark is a mark of separating the goods or services of your business from those of the other businesses.
A trademark can be a visual symbol e.g. word, name, device, label, or numeral used by your business to distinguish your products or services from other similar products or services by other businesses.
When a trademark is chosen the same should be protected by law under intellectual property rights because the goodwill of the product or service should belong to the owner of this original product or service and the competitors or fraudsters should be stopped by law to copy or use the mark and gain an unfair advantage.
Trademark registration comes to the aid of its owner to protect it from being copied by others.
Benefits of Trademark Registration
- Trademark registration provides legal protection against its infringement or use by others, whether intentionally or unintentionally, to gain an unfair advantage.
- Ideally, famous products or services are identified by their sign like a logo and the same helps create loyalty and brand value over time. Brands strong in all respects are a great factor for retaining existing customers and attracting new customers, in turn, create more business for the brand owner.
- Once a trademark is registered the same can be capitalized in the books as an intangible asset which in turn adds value to the balance sheet of the business.
